Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where there is the tissue similar to the endometrium (lining of the uterus) outside the uterus. It causes a chronic inflammatory response resulting in the formation of scar tissue (adhesions, fibrosis) in the pelvis and other parts of the body.

It is a condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus. In endometriosis, tissue is found in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or intestines. The most common symptoms are pain and menstrual irregularities. Effective treatments such as hormone therapy and surgical excision are available.  The most likely cause of endometriosis is retrograde menstrual flow. Some of the tissue shed during the period flows through the fallopian tubes to other areas of the body such as Pelvis.
