Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where there is the tissue similar to the endometrium (lining of the uterus) outside the uterus. It causes a chronic inflammatory response resulting in the formation of scar tissue (adhesions, fibrosis) in the pelvis and other parts of the body.

ย

It is a condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus. In endometriosis, tissue is found in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or intestines. The most common symptoms are pain and menstrual irregularities. Effective treatments such as hormone therapy and surgical excision are available.ย  The most likely cause of endometriosis is retrograde menstrual flow. Some of the tissue shed during the period flows through the fallopian tubes to other areas of the body such as Pelvis.

Symptoms of Endometriosis

  • Pain during passing motions / urine
  • Blood in urine during periods
  • Infertility (Problem in conception)
  • Dysparunia (painful intercourse)
  • Dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation)
  • Chronic lower abdominal / pelvic pain
  • Menorrhagia (excessive / prolonged bleeding)

Endometriosis is a very painful and debilitating condition affecting more than 15% of women. Endometrial tissue is usually found outside the uterus where it should not be inside the uterus. This misplaced endometrial tissue can be found in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or abdomen. Being sensitive to menstrual cycle hormones, the pain associated with it follows the same pattern as the menstrual cycle.
